Programs: The Value of Relationships

"The bridges we build can lead us to worlds we could have scarcely imagined ... The ones we burn can prevent us from those things we fear to even hope for."

-A. Lawrence Haskins

What content informed this program?

Our ongoing dialogue with incarcerated juveniles, corrections officers and the judiciary inform us that, when it comes to making life-altering decisions, very little weight or consideration is given to the existing relationships that said decision will affect. Our response is to show the incarcerated juvenile the value of these relationships and why they are not worth sacrificing for a quick high or a fast buck.

Where is this program implemented?

Alternative education schools, juvenile detention facilities and community programs that can provide us exposure to at-risk youth. Our thinking is that if the at-risk or incarcerated youth can be persuaded to invest mentally and emotionally in these relationships then they will consider the impact on these "investments" in their decision-making process.

What are the program's core objectives & components?

The core objective of the "The Value of Relationships" program is to encourage the at-risk or incarcerated youth to think beyond the moment and consider how their actions will affect others. Core components are:

  • The Ripple Effect
  • The Eternal Perspective
  • The Power of Adding Value
